•Pernod Ricard has announced a new limited edition of the Green Spot: a single pot still Irish whiskey finished in Pinot Noir casks from Quails’ Gate Winery in Canada. The whiskey is the third release in the Wine Geese series, named for the members of the Irish diaspora who founded wineries around the world. Green Spot Quails’ Gate is bottled at 46% abv and first matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks before finishing in Pinot Noir barrels for 16 months. The newest of the Spot whiskies is rolling out now in limited quantities across the U.S. for a suggested price of $70 a bottle.
•Crowds flocked to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida this past weekend for the third annual Big Smoke Meets WhiskyFest extravaganza. The day started with a slew of afternoon seminars and culminated in a grand tasting of whisky, rum, Tequila, and fine cigars, all accompanied by a live band. Whisky Advocate has a full recap.
•Banfi chairman emeritus Dr. John Mariani has been awarded the WSWA’s inaugural Ray Herrmann H.E.R.O Award. Representing its namesake’s values of “Humanitarian, Ethical, Respectful, and One-of-a-kind,” the honor is sponsored by Breakthru Beverage Group and awards the recipient $20,000 to donate to the charity of their choice. “I am grateful to WSWA and Breakthru Beverage Group for the opportunity to direct the $20,000 award to the WSWA Educational Foundation College Scholarship Program and match it with an additional $20,000 gift,” said Mariani, who was recognized for contributions to the wine world through his family business, as well as his philanthropic work through the Banfi Foundation, which has endowed thousands of scholarships in the hospitality sector.
•Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, part of the Proximo portfolio, has announced the second iteration of its annual Diamond Peak release, Diamond Peak Batch #2: Extra Añejo Cask. The new offering is a five- to eight-year aged American single malt that then spends just over two years in Extra Añejo casks that previously held the Jose Cuervo family’s small-batch Tequila, Reserva de la Familia. The 45% abv whiskey retails at $80-$85 a 750-ml. bottle.
•Miami, Florida-based BGPL USA, the importer of Barton & Guestier, Patriarche, and Listel, is launching new aluminum mini-bottles of Veuve du Vernay Ice Rosé. According to the company, the matte pink bottle has the advantage of faster cooling time, better durability, and chill retention and boasts a pull-ring cap for convenience. Veuve du Vernay Ice Rosé is produced and bottled in France and made from a blend that includes Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cinsault. Intended for individual consumption, the aluminum 250-ml. bottles are available now in select south Florida retailers for $6 each.
•Bacardi has promoted Stephanie Macleod, naming her to the newly created post of director of blending, Scotch whisky. Formerly, Macleod served as the master blender for Bacardi’s blended Scotches. Macleod’s new role recognizes her 25 years of experience as well as expanding her duties, which will now include a greater emphasis on premiumizing Bacardi’s blends. Macleod will continue to work on the Dewar’s and William Lawson blends, and will remain as the malt master for Bacardi’s five single malts: Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, the Deveron, and Royal Brackla.
